Projek Pembesaran dan Pembaikan Surau Al-Ihsan

Surau Al-Ihsan di Sekolah Menengah Sains Johor, Kluang (SMSJ) siap di bina pada tahun 1990. Setelah hampir 20 tahun, Surau Al-Ihsan perlu dibesarkan untuk menampung jumlah pelajar yang semakin bertambah. Ia juga memerlukan pembaikan infrastruktur dan peralatan.

Bersama Beramal Kebaikan Dunia Akhirat

Down memory lane

In conjunction with the coming Malam Amal SMSJ 2010, I am posting again this group photos taken circa 1974. I hope those in the pictures can make it to this once in a life time gathering of all batches from 1974 to the present time. I am sure the youngest boy/gal in the picture is now about 45 years old and the oldest about 53 years young.! How fast time flies!

Assalamualaikum to all my friends in 5E1.

I have been a silent reader and a follower of all your mails to your classmates.Through reading these mails, it strikes me that all of you are the lucky few who are given the opportunities by Allah to still be in contact with each other even after 35 years you have left school.

Although I was not in the same class as all of you I could still share the joy and excitement of being in touch after all these years. Last year I went to Kuantan for a course and managed to contact Nahariah by using the hp number listed in Zack's blog. We talked briefly,unfortunately we could not meet.

I tried tracing the 5E2 students, my classmates and praise to Allah, I managed to trace Shamsinar, thanks again to Zack.The rest I could not track them. A few years ago Rashid Mustafa lived opposite my house in BP but he moved in 1990 to Muar and we have lost contact since then.

To Kak Idah, Yut, Keyno and Izan ( or should I call Keyno and Izan, Dr now) we shared moments especially during prep time in the afternoon then and the memories of those days are still vividly remembered. Just like the lyrics of the song-Memories,maybe beautiful and yet what's too painful to remember,we simply choose to forget.

I too have chosen to forget the painful memories of my stay in SMSJ and simply remember the beautiful ones with all of you and our other friends. lastly,all your mails are one of the things that I look forward to whenever I reach home from school before doing the chores and cooking for my beloved.Though I may not have any for the 5E2s in your group, permit me to be their representative.

To all 1975 batch of SMSJ students, all of you are my friends,just like the stars, we may not always see them,but we always know that they are there.

Note from Saabana

Zai and Joe acknowledgement about only a handful of us have the time
to put their thoughts and memories into words are true. There are
reasons or maybe excuses. For me.., just a plain excuse-damn lazy to
punch a few keys on my notebook. Currently, everyday I feel like
doing one thing only- lying flat on my back against the sandy sand
near my home with a sun shade over my head and a tall glass of ice
lemon tea beside me.

Anyhow..I am now staying put in Kuala Terengganu or to be precise in
Rusila(near Tuan Guru Uztaz Abd. Hadi Mosque) since my other half is
posted in KT late last year. Once or twice a month I do drop to KL.
Rusila is about 12 KM from KT and 2 KM from Marang. From Marang we can
hop to Pulau Kapas. Now is almost squid jigging (Mencadat Sotong)
season down here. If any of you are interested to do such activity
just ring a bell to me.

Going through the emails…Tahir experienced with poor English language
command by the young generation intrigue me and I could relate some
of my experiences.

After college, I was attached to one of the GLC. It was more of
corporate banking or merchant banking (now refer as investment
banking) type of works that involved a lot of reports and working
papers submission to MOF, EPU and PNB. Most of the reports were in
English but sometime the ministers preferred in B. Melayu. Trying to
translate Finance/Investment terminology from English to B. Melayu
was a struggle for us since DBP at that time do not have any
dictionary on it.(Tahir should know about this).

Communicating in English on finance subject to non finance
professional is also a hassle. I remembered back in mid-1980’s, where
our local finance industry was still at infant stage, I was assigned
to schedule/arrange loan syndication for Perak Hanjong Cement- a
joint-venture between Perak SEDC and Hanjoong Cement of Korea. The
loan was guaranteed by Malaysian government and Korea’s Export and
Import Bank. Putting the finance terms into a binding legal piece of
paper, involved days of arguing between the lawyers and the finance
people. So much so that we all have to be confined for 3 days/nights
in KL Hilton Then we have the next stage, arguing with the translators
because it had to be translated into Korean language.

Now days, DBP has a dictionary for finance terms of English to Malay
and vice-versa. But finance industry is evolving, just refer to the
recent financial tsunami of the big financial institutions in New York
and London, about 10-15 years ago such finance term as
collateralised debt obligations (CDO) and subrime lending does not
exist. Now in finance we have a term/jargon that refers modern
finance as financial engineering. Maybe they like to be called
engineers..sorry Zai, Ghaffar, Othman and those qualified engineers up
there.

In late 1980’s I did part-time lecturing in UKM and ITM. In UKM I
taught portfolio management for actuarial science students and luckily
those students are chosen group and one bright group of students. I
taught in rojak languages-English and B. Melayu since some of the
investment jargons are difficult to translate into B. Melayu and sound
weird in B. Melayu…if you all get time in your hands just peruse
through such words for example NPV, IRR, payback period, the discount
rate, Accounting rate of return, weighted return, account payable
turnover ratio..and all those accounting ratio..oh..this is just a
few…let see the new modern finance we have jargon such as call and put
with collar, butterfly and vanilla call and put…..and derivatives and
swaps.

In ITM my students are from Diploma in Investment Analysis course (ITM
discontinued the course in 1990’s). In investment analysis there are
two branches of studies-one is fundamental which refer to perusing the
account books looking for P/E ratio, book value etc..ala Warren Buffet
and the other one is the technical analysis.

I have to tackle explaining technical analysis(TA) to those students.
For the benefits of us all, technical analysis is considered a voodoo
branch of investment analysis but finance academicians since it seek
to predict future market movement based on previous or past action of
market/prices. TA is not fully recognized by finance scholars who are
still embedded in efficient market theory(EMH) developed by Professor
Eugene Fama of the University of Chicago. Traders either small or big
(retails and institutions) at least utilized a simple TA indicators.

For example, in business section of our mainstream newspapers there
are charts of Bursa Saham KLCI using candlesticks with moving average.
Charts, candlesticks, moving averages are indicators of TA. And
unfortunately, until now DBP does not publish any dictionary for TA
terms in B. Melayu.

English terms in TA is just a plain English terms but to translate it
directly and literally into B. Melayu will sound a bit dry and funny.
To bore some of you with a TA indicator definition I attach a
write-of of price pattern-Head and Shoulder Pattern that did occurred
currently on KLCI.

Try translating it literally into B. Melayu !!
They are three basic term for the pattern.
Head-kepala
Shoulder-bahu
Neckline- garis leher

Translate it literally will be “pola kepala dan bahu” for head and
shoulders pattern and let see this sentences ”Go short (sell) when
the currency pair goes below the neckline” which can be literally
translated as membuat pendek(jualan) sekiranya pasangan matawang
bergerak kebawah garis leher.

I guess we all face the similar problems in our works. Just imagine
for the younger generation trying to decipher the words and meaning of
a technical paper.

Last and not least..Congrat to Prof Ghizan, and to Datok Redza, I will
try to make it for the charity dinner and the phone number of Bro.
Rahman in KT you forwarded to me, I lost it because someone stole my
h/p.

Some 5E2 friends...............

Good to hear from Saabana and Halina. A breeze of fresh air, is the least i could describe the writings from both of you. I am sure many are bored already with me and azman's expression of opinions and remarks so far. Can we have a gust of fresh air from other friends too? Thirty five years on, it is still never too late to say hello. We are in our early fifties (some say into the 5 series) and most are now into the comfort zone, resting on their laurels and have time to kill. If you want to wait till you are into your 6 series, when you retire, then i am sure many will not be able to appreciate your thoughts and writings, as some of us might kick the bucket earlier! hehe

Halina, we hope more will be added into our growing email listing. Even though you are from 5E2, we still treat you as one of ours. We share together the comradeship during the two years in SMSJ, whereas the memory and nostalgia are still fresh in our mind, either good or bad. The guys in 5E2 were our close friends too. I still have contacts among your 5E2 classmates:

1. Yazid Atan. (0178899861)

Who can forget this sycophantic and hilarious guy, having an IQ just below that of Einstein? Who can forget his high pitch shrieking shouting on top of his voice every morning at the dormitory, akin to Tarzan in heat, calling Jane during the mating season? His shrieking could be heard even up to the Headmaster's house. HM tried to quiz us who the culprit was, but our mouth were all sealed. One day he ambushed Yazid at his dorm and he was caught doing the act. His punishment was to circumambulate the new football field beside the male hostel, running bare footed, on mimosa and all. After the ordeal, Yazid can still smile wryly towards us and never regrets his action. He never stops shrieking even after that, and i guess HM gave-up on him. We were puzzled why he likes to shriek, some thinking that it clears his mucus and phlegm. My theory is that he was practicing to be a rock singer. I hope one day when i meet him, I'll get the answer straight from the horse's mouth.

I met Yazid during our A Level days and he still look and behave as crazy as before. He was wearing an earring on one ear ( in UK wearing earrings on both ears signify a gaiety behavior) and closest to being a John Bon Jovi lookalike. Anyhow after that we lost contact, until now.

Dr. Ariff Kasmo met him recently, and I am glad to inform you, that Yazid is now a Haji, and the president of his Residential Association in Petaling Jaya. He is running a thriving IT business and doesn't wear any earrings. People do change for the better.............Takbir.

2. Dr. Ariff Kasmo (0173164928).

Ariff is teaching in UKM and i met him recently at my office. After all these years, sorry to say (!!!) , Ariff's strong Javanese accent is still there. haha. He is doing a fantastic dakwah work, giving lectures on topics about Islam and Science. He is a much sought after Dakwah speaker, and i think he will not disappoint you if you invite him to give lectures at your office and surau/masjid. Ariff is in our mailing list, so Ariff, please respond whether what I have said is true.

3. Abu Bakar 'Burn' (0123115078)

When we did our A levels, we were 'dispersed' throughout the British Isles. Ariff and Norizan were in Blackpool, Yazid in Cheltenham, myself in Hastings while Bakar in Oxford. During one of the spring holidays, i went to Bakar's place in Oxford. As you know, Oxford is one of the major University towns in UK, and being placed in Oxford College to do A levels was a privilege in itself. But surprisingly, many Malay students fell to the temptations of the flesh, with many becoming dropouts. Of course Bakar was not one of them.

In Oxford, one of the past time was to "PUTT", i.e 'putting' a small canoe like boat along the many canals using long poles to push the boat forward. It was quite an experience, as we 'putt' through the numerous canals where nudist camps were abound. We were more shy than the nudist , as Bakar and me 'putt' very vigorously passing the nudist camp, looking the other way (if you believe that, you also believe that Michael Jackson is still alive haha) and laughing uncontrollably. Those were the days......

Bakar did his Computer studies in Brighton, and we met a few times in Kelana Jaya, as his sister is my neighbour. Recently his sister told me that Bakar is now into the 'arts'. He is now taking up canvas painting as a hobby and now paints until the cow comes home!

4. Hamzah Harith (034392200, 0192189141)

Hamzah was one of the rugger stars in the school rugby team. He is tall, fair and handsome, and a very quiet guy. He called me recently just to say hello as he is doing some maintenance work in UIAM. He is doing business in fixing fixed telephone line and a sub contractor to TM.

5. Yaakob Hitam.

Yaakob hails from Buluh Kasap Segamat and now a contractor doing landscaping works.

Bukit Magnet (Jabal Maghnatis) Madinah

Mungkin ramai yang tidak pernah mendengar Bukit Magnet di Madinah ini. Bagi Jemaah Indonesia Bukit Magnet yang jauhnya 40km dari Madinah adalah satu tempat yang mesti dilawati. Orang Malaysia mengenali tempat ini hanya beberapa tahun yang lepas.

Bagi pakej Haji atau Umrah, lawatan ke Bukut Magnet tidak termasuk didalam lawatan kekawasan kawasan bersejarah disekitar kota Madinah. Jika anda ingin kesana, anda perlu berbincang dengan pemandu bas, dan selalunya tambahan 40 riyal saorang akan dipinta oleh pemandu. Agak mahal saya kira kerana jika satu bas boleh memuatkan 20 jemaah, jumlah nya menjadi 800 riyal untuk kesatu tempat yang hanya 40 km dari Madinah!.

Apa spesial nya Bukit Magnet?

Jabal Maghnatis (bukit magnet) ini ialah satu tempat di mana kereta/bas akan ditarik semula ke Madinah. Apabila sampai ke kawasan ini, kereta akan bergerak sendiri untuk balik ke Madinah. Kekuatan tarikan ini hingga, kelajuan bas atau kereta akan bergerak hingga melebihi 120 km/ jam.

Ini salah satu lagi dari keajaiban kota Madinah. Pada hari Khamis dan Jumaat, orang Arab akan datang ke sini beramai-ramai, membawa keluarga. Mereka akan berkelah di tempat ini. Tempat ini juga merupakan kawasan lapang yang cantik pemandangannya. Terdapat pokok-pokok rimbun yang akan melindungi sesiapa di sini dari terikan matahari.

Apabila engin bas diberhentikan di kawasan tersebut, bas akan meluncur dengan sendirinya saperti ditarik oleh kuasa ghaib sehingga kelajuan 120 km/hr, walaupun jalan nya mendatar. Yang pelik nya sesiapa yang membawa kompas, jarum kompas masih menunjukkan arah utara dan ini bermakna tidak ada tarikan magnetik dikesan (saya menggunakan jam Tissot T Touch yang mempunyai kompas).

Mutawif kami, saorang pelajar Indonesia menceritakan satu cerita mengenai kelebihan dan keanehan Bukit Magnet. Mungkin cerita nya tidak sahih, tetapi terpulanglah jikalau sesiapa ingin mempercayainya.

Semasa peperangan Uhud, Rasulullah saw telah tercedera parah akibat kepintaran Khalid Al walid memerintahkan pemanah orang orang mushrik menawan jabal Uhud. Sahabat sahabat telah mengusung Rasulullah untuk menyelamatkan beliau dan membawa beliau keluar dari Jabal Uhud jauh dari Madinah. Rombongan beliau dikejar oleh tentera berkuda orang Mushrik. Apabila tentera Mushrik sampai dikawasan Bukit magnet, mereka tidak dapat mengejar rombongan Rasulullah saw kerana tarikan magnet yang memperlahankan kelajuan mereka. (Mereka memakai banyak peralatan yang diperbuat dari besi saperti baju perisai dan lain lain).

Itu lah yang diceritakan oleh mutawif Indonesia kepada kami. Orang Arab Madinah ramai yang tidak tahu mengenai Bukit Magnet dan cerita cerita disebaliknya. Rakan saya, saorang Arab penduduk Madinah tercengang apabila saya menceritakan perihal Jabal Maghnatis ini.
